Issue 2 published in July 2009 saw the magazine change its form, it shrunk from A3 to A4, but this in now way compromised the integrity of the magazine. The fresh look together with new and established writers, artists and creators made the second issue as special as the first.

This time we had a chat with the people behind Inisfox, Mantua and Sibin festivals. Conor O’Brien of the Villagers talked to John Balfe. Sam Keogh looked at the spaces that have fucked off and done it themselves. Miss Kempinksi gets a double-paged spead. We have a pull-out short story The Tin Man written by David Foster and illustrated by Kate Dwyer. The poems, recipes and again two amazing fashion shoots top it all off nicely.

TIN MAN

I passed a very peculiar night last night, half drenched in cabin fever. Everything I heard, read, struck me and chimed in the tin shell of my torso. The nuts and bolts that held me together began to worm their way out, wriggling free, and bit by bit I fell apart.
Finally, all I was aware of was the rollercoaster plunge and the bathroom blurring as my head toppled, rattling, rolling, resting on the floor. And all the while that song loops within, those lines:

“and you can have it all, my empire of dirt, I will let you down, I will make you hurt…”

Not being one to wallow, I lolled out my tongue, flexed it and started myself rolling. Tiles gave way to carpet gave way to gravel and soon I was well on my way, freewheeling downhill.
As I gathered momentum the world lurched orbits around me, alternating between darkness and a streaked cosmos of street lamps. (These pseudo-suns, they’ve washed my world in seedy jaundice for too long, they hum with the coital throb of suburbia!)
My nose threatened to derail me, its’ bump veering me towards the street, towards scandalous up-skirt glimpses. I rolled until the incline evened out, until I tottered to a standstill.
Settled in sawdust outside McCullough’s Butchers, I waited with eyes on the vertical horizon. Patient, waiting for the sun to peep sheepishly around, a drunken lover in a door frame. Stage-whispering.
I must have dozed off, or indulged in an extended blink, as next thing I knew it was morning and I was surrounded by dogs. Hungry dogs, snarling ribcages. Above us a pair of aproned arms were shaking out a sack. The flump of meat sparked a frenzy, and I felt the damp of offal as I turned over organs with lips and tongue, searching ‘till I found what I’d come for. A heart.
Functionally useless, of course, but enough to fill a gap in me.

Oh, Francis

Oh, Francis is a cultural orgy of fashion, art, music and fun. We don't want to cast judgment, we want to inspire. Our emphasis is on visual and the written word. We've got a nice little collection of stories, poems, illustration, photography and a few rants thrown in for good measure. We want to show off the talent we know, and the talent we've come to know. Having lived and studied in Dublin we've experienced a plethora of culture saturating our eyes and ears. Our humble magazine will share our findings; all the things that make us go oooh aaaah yeah, nice.

Our first issue is being launched upstairs in Whelans. We've got New Amusement, Land Lovers and Autumn Owls playing the music with a couple of DJs playing afterwards. It should be a good night and well worth the 8 euros, which we need to fund our non-profit magazine. We haven't sought advertising for the magazine, not because we're anti-capitalists or any of that malarkey, but we're doing this in our spare time and would rather concentrate on the quality of our lovely mag. We will upload the magazine each issue on our site ohfrancis.com and we will distribute it around the city for free hopefully. And, and, and if you come you'll be the proud owner of a beautifully put together A3 magazine bursting at the seems with pictures, poems and seeds!

Doing My Nut In!!!

Well it's not quite, but that's the title of the final brief I am working on at the minute. Designing a small book, the concept being that although we speak the same language in Dublin we are divided by it's usage and colloquialisms. I am using the Liffey as the divide. Here are a couple of double page spreads, work in progress of course! Once it's is finished, bound and looking yummy I will put up some pics.... Toodle Pip!

Toejam is on every Satur-day and Satur-night in The Bernard Shaw Pub. I was asked to design posters and web banners by the lovely lads. I haven't made it down to any yet as I always seem to be busy, 'tis a pity as I do love a good rummage at a carboot sale.

Yum Yum in my Tum Tum!

This was an entry for the IDEA awards, I had to design packaging for an environmentally concious ice cream - 'Baron von Eismanns Flavours of the World'.
I kept it simple and used rich colours so that it would have a strong presence in the shop environment. Part of the brief was to have a secondary use for the tub after the ice cream was finished. The secondary use I went for was 'cut out' moustaches, fun for all the family!
When I heard the word Baron it conjured up images of sumptuous banquets with delightful ladies and dandy men (with facial hair of course), so I used a moustache as the logo. I then created different characters with various moustaches for the different flavours - Rambunctious Raspberry, Vivacious Vanilla, Gregarious Gooseberry and so on.
Thanks to my sister for being my tache-tastic model!

A few illustrations I did using cut out paper and photoshop/illustrator.

The book was a collection of emails sent home to parents and friends from various parts of the world detailing the peculiar activities of young gap year travelers. Not the greatest read in fairness, but some good imagery. I did have fun with these illustrations but I wasn't entirely happy with them before the deadline in college, but I can't always be a perfectionist now can I?
